Leyhill WRC AMP8 Improvements

Successfully delivering the Leyhill WRC AMP8 upgrade with advanced MBBR technology, low-carbon civil solutions, and enhanced infrastructure to achieve outstanding ammonia compliance ahead of the 2026 regulatory deadline.

Overview

Leyhill WRC (Wotton-Under-Edge) was upgraded under AMP8 to meet a new Environment Agency ammonia consent of 3.8 mg/L by the 31st March 2026 regulatory deadline. The scheme was delivered on programme, achieving a significantly improved ammonia result of 0.67 mg/L during commissioning.

Objectives
  • Achieve new ammonia limit of 3.8 mg/L
  • Install tertiary MBBR technology
  • Upgrade electrical infrastructure
  • Deliver works ahead of the 2026 deadline
  • Reduce carbon footprint through low-carbon civil solutions
  • Maintain full site operation during construction

Scope of Works

  • Installation of Siltbuster tertiary MBBR unit
  • New MBBR feed pumping station
  • New de-gassing and final effluent sampling chambers
  • Ammonia/temperature instrumentation
  • New MCC, upsized transformer, MDP and standby generator
  • Soil stabilisation using tarmac bases to reduce embodied carbon
  • Strong in-house multidisciplinary delivery (Civils,M&E, PM, environmental)
  • Proven, compact MBBR technology reducing commissioning risk
  • Low-carbon civils approach through tarmac bases
  • Effective programme control and cross-team coordination
  • Early identification and resolution of ground condition constraints
  • Ongoing monitoring to ensure sustained ammonia compliance
  • Asset takeover and handover to operations by July 2026
  • Capture cost and programme data to benchmark future AMP8 MBBR schemes
  • Apply soil stabilisation and low-carbon civils learnings to similar sites
  • Future proofing enabled through installed Multimedia Filter infrastructure and transformer up scaling
