Hatch Beauchamp WRC

Enhancing storm resilience and operational efficiency, the Hatch Beauchamp WRC AMP8 Improvements project delivered a 45m³ caisson-shaft storm tank, upgraded pumping and wash-water systems, and modernised electrical infrastructure—completed on time, within budget, and with significant savings through early mobilisation, proactive stakeholder engagement, and strong risk management.

Overview

The Hatch Beauchamp WRC AMP8 Improvements project was initiated as an early-start AMP8 scheme to enhance storm resilience and operational performance at the site. Delivered between April 2025 and February 2026, the project centred on the construction of a 45m³ below-ground storm tank using a caisson shaft solution—chosen due to challenging ground conditions, high groundwater levels, and strict site constraints. Despite supply-chain delays and the discovery of unknown buried services, the scheme was completed within the planned programme and budget, achieving nearly £100k in savings

Objectives
  • Increase the site’s storm storage capacity through installation of a new 45m³ storm tank.
  • Improve operational resilience with a dedicated storm return pump and upgraded wash-water system.
  • Enhance electrical infrastructure by replacing the existing distribution board with a higher-capacity unit.
  • Deliver the scheme early in AMP8 to maintain continuity of work and minimise delivery risk.
  • Engage stakeholders early to ensure safe, coordinated construction on a live operational site.

The project delivered key assets including a 45m³ caisson-shaft storm tank, storm return pump, wash-water booster set, a new CopaSac chamber, and a replacement distribution board, with BIMTek and YTL’s EIT team enabling early mobilisation and strong risk management. Early procurement and YTL’s in-house delivery improved communication, sped up decisions, and reduced on-site risks using the offsite-built wash-water system.

  • Early design mobilisation ensured readiness at the start of AMP8.
  • Strong collaboration between BIMTek and YTL engineering teams streamlined design development.
  • Proactive stakeholder engagement improved alignment and reduced operational disruption.
  • Robust risk management enabled early mitigation of emerging issues.
  • Use of internal YTL resources increased programme certainty and responsiveness.
  • Effective early procurement secured high-quality delivery and wider programme efficiencies.

These factors enabled the project to finish on time, within budget, and with significant savings.

  • Matt Durbin & Associates shortlisted for future caisson-shaft storm tank schemes.
  • Lessons from early mobilisation and stakeholder coordination to inform upcoming AMP8 projects.
  • Continued use of YTL internal teams to maintain efficient communication and reduce delivery risks.
  • Performance monitoring of the new assets to validate operational benefits and identify optimisation opportunities.
